Accidental Dislodgment and Legal Implications

 

Objectives

·       Evaluate the impact of catheter dislodgment

·       Review results of dislodgment research and the impact in critical applications

·       List patient complications and cost associated with dislodgment

·       Discuss safety and legal concerns with catheter dislodgment and application of patient treatment levels with risk

·       Examine how instituting safety facilitates patient continuity of care

 

Nancy Moureau, RN, BSN, PHD, CRNI, CPUI, VA-BC is the owner of PICC Excellence, Inc. providing education, consulting and research on Vascular Access Devices for more than 30 years. Dr. Moureau's clinical experience spans Pediatric, neonatal, ICU PICC/IV Team and home infusion patient care. As the CEO of PICC Excellence, her current responsibilities include education development, research, speaking worldwide, legal case review, manufacturer consulting, insertion and supervision of peripheral and central vascular access. Through PICC Excellence more than 80 online educational courses and pathways to vascular access competency are provided to hospitals and individuals on vascular access subjects and procedures. In 2009 the first and only PICC Certification™ CPUI™, Certified PICC Ultrasound Inserter, credentialing program was established to validate education, knowledge and competency for PICC inserters. As Chair of the WOCOVA CVC Taskforce Nancy facilitated the completion and publication of an evidence-based publication on minimal CVC training requirements. Nancy is an author of over 50 publications, recipient of the Reader’s Choice Award for publications and the Herbst Award for lifetime contributions to the specialty of vascular access. Nancy most recently worked at a major teaching hospital in South Carolina as part of the PICC/IV Team with clinical activities that included PICC insertion, ultrasound guided peripheral device insertion and instruction, troubleshooting, declotting and management of all central devices and currently contracts for hospital insertions and with patients in home infusion.
