Thrombosis- Size Really Doesn’t Matter: What you need to Know
Session Overview: In vascular access care, the “size doesn’t matter” principle shifts focus from measuring clots to managing risk, preventing complications, and acting quickly. This aligns with broader thrombosis guidance that prioritizes location, patient status, and potential for harm over dimensional metrics
Learning Objectives
- Location over length: A small clot in a high‑risk vessel (e.g., near a major vein junction or in a central line lumen) can be as dangerous as a large clot in a low‑risk area
- Risk factors: CRT risk is driven by patient factors (e.g., hypercoagulability, infection, immobility), catheter type, and site, not just clot dimensions
- Early recognition: Prompt identification of signs such as redness, swelling, pain, or line malfunction is critical — delaying action increases the risk of progression and systemic complications
- Clinical decision‑making: Treatment choices (e.g., anticoagulation) depend on clot location, patient stability, and potential for embolization, not solely on measured size
